Crafty Devils: Beer & BBQ

“Here’s a menu, let me know if you have any questions.” Usually you’re at a local watering hole when you are told this, but at a tailgate? Every home game for Arizona State football the Crafty Devils will give you a full menu of beers from across the US to choose from. To make your experience even better, grab a plate of top of the line smoked meats.

Adam a season ticket holder for 17 years partnered with PJ 5 seasons ago and the Crafty Devils have continued to look ahead, never looking back again.

Fully equipped with a hitched trailer that includes a flat screen TV and speakers for music, they are hard to miss. A cooler filled with 26 craft beer options, mysterious liquor called “Do You Want A Shot Or Not” and even Jell-O shots! I think it’s safe to say if you come sober, you won’t leave sober.

After a trip together to Seattle the duo knew they needed to step up their beer game, shots of Tequila and drinking Miller Lite for all of tailgate wasn’t going to cut it. Adam said, “Dude we gotta start stepping up our beer game.” PJ took this as a personal challenge. From there on out as he is traveling every other week for work he tries to pick up beer that we can’t find here in Arizona that people want. “It just kind of kept getting bigger and bigger,” he said when explaining how he recently filled 2 suitcases with each 50 lbs of beer from Chicago.

Every Monday morning the Crafty Devils get fresh pours from keg to crowler from North Street Beer Station in Raleigh, North Carolina. They even reach out directly to PJ to make sure they aren’t sending something they have had before.

Never duplicating a beer is important at this tailgate. Some of the most desired this season have been Russian River’s Pliny the Elder, The Alchemist’s Heady Topper, Treehouse’s Julius & Haze, Lawson’s Finest Liquids’ Sip of Sunshine and for the last game of the season Focal Banger from The Alchemist Brewery. Even if you aren’t a beer person, PJ has something for you to help you branch out. If you prefer a darker porter or stout, or even a sour, you will be covered when you come here.

When I asked Adam how he’s got the point of smoking meats for every game, he said “His beer list keeps getting really, really good so I try to keep up and can’t let him get too far ahead of me.” Apparently, the party subs weren’t getting the job done. So now you can find Adam often waking up at 3am to prep his meat to smoke on his Post Oak shipped direct from Texas. With a normal 7pm kickoff, he truly has dedicated himself to long Saturdays. The menu for this game was pork and beef plate ribs, smoked for 8 hours with salt, pepper and cayenne. Fall off the bone, perfectly seasoned and so juicy! Other weeks have consisted of Carne Asada and Smoked Chicken Tacos, Pulled Pork, Pork Belly Burnt Ends and also Brisket that was featured during an ESPN timeout.

United over BBQ and beer, but all here to enjoy ASU football. To the duo this is about building relationships that you otherwise normally don’t get. Bringing like-minded individuals together to share a few laughs before supporting their local team. So next time you find yourself at Sun Devil Stadium, find PJ and Adam tell them I sent you and grab a bite to eat and enjoy some craft beer.
